Boil Water Advisory for Grand Isle
02 September 2008
In conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Jefferson Parish Water Department is issuing a Boil Water Advisory for the town of Grand Isle as a precautionary measure due to loss of water pressure in the distribution system on the island from Hurricane Gustav. The restoration of pressure cannot be determined accurately at this time, but is expected to take 1-2 weeks, depending upon the extent of damage to the distribution system.
All residents of the island are urged to boil or disinfect their water by one of the following methods before consuming it or using it for food preparation:
Boil the water for one full minute in a clean container. The one minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a bottle or pouring it from one container to another.
Disinfect the water by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of unscented, liquid chlorine laundry bleach with one gallon of water and letting it stand for at least 30 minutes prior to consumption. Be sure to mix it thoroughly. If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, it can be made more palatable by allowing the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours or by repeatedly pouting it from one clean container to another.
This BOIL WATER ADVISORY will remain in effect until rescinded by Jefferson Parish Water Department or the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. The distribution system must be pressurized and bacteriological samples collected and analyzed to assure the water meets potable water standards.
