Jefferson Parish Sewer System Update
04 September 2008
Jefferson Parish is bringing in additional special equipment to bolster the parish’s sanitary sewerage system to deal with the lack of power at most of the parish sewer lift stations.
Portable generators will be brought in to power some of the stations and approximately 30 vacuum trucks will be deployed throughout the parish to remove wastewater from inoperable lift stations and transport it to a lift station that is working.
Lift stations without electricity are steadily being restored to power as Entergy makes progress with repairs to its system. According to Entergy 65 per cent of East Bank service has been restored and 45 per cent of the West Bank. The temporary measures by the parish will be in place until Entergy is able to restore power to all lift stations.
Most of the parish’s 505 lift stations are without power and unable to move wastewater from residences and businesses to the parish’s sewerage treatment plants.
The parish is still asking residents to limit the amount of water going down their drains from sinks, toilets, showers and bathtubs, and washing machines. If the system becomes overloaded with wastewater, it can back up and overflow into homes and businesses. Jefferson Parish will continue to issue updates on its sewerage system and increased electrical restoration.
