Storm Debris and Garbage Collection Update
12 September 2008
Jefferson Parish has two national disaster debris removal contractors, Storm Reconstruction Services (SRS) and Ceres Environmental, collecting debris from right-of ways throughout Jefferson Parish.
Debris collection from right-of-ways began Sunday, Sept. 7th. Debris totals are estimated at 130,000 – 150,000 cubic yards, and it is estimated that it will take a minimum of 2 to 2 1/2 weeks from the start date to conduct a first sweep of the entire Parish. A second sweep is expected to take 30 to 45 days.
For historical perspective, following Hurricane Cindy in July 2005, an estimated 115,000 cubic yards of storm debris was collected from Parish right-of-ways. It took the Parish contractors 2 weeks to complete the first sweep of the Parish, and 30 days to complete the right-of-way collection of storm debris.
For post-storm debris collection, the Parish is divided into 20 zones: 12 on the east bank and 8 on the west bank. Crews have been working collecting debris from right-of-ways in all 20 zones. Yesterday, there were 25 crews working throughout the Parish. Crews were shut down today, as safety rules do not allow personnel to man towers constructed at area landfills to monitor incoming debris per FEMA regulations. We anticipate 25-30 crews will be on the ground tomorrow, working throughout the Parish.
In addition, Jefferson Parish Public Works crews will be picking up certain storm debris items throughout the Parish to speed up the debris removal process.

Garbage Collection
Waste Management is collecting curbside regular household garbage (canned or bagged food waste, diapers, papers) according to the regular collection schedule.
In addition, to assist in the speed of recovery, Waste Management is collecting containerized (bags & regulation sized cans) small debris, such as leaves and yard clippings, much of which is storm-generated, to the extent possible, while making sure sufficient truck capacity is allowed to maintain the regular schedule for household garbage (food/paper wastes).
The company is also collecting furniture and other household trash that is placed by the curb.
Additionally, Waste Management is collecting white goods including refrigerators/freezers and other large appliances. All food waste must be removed from refrigerators/freezers and bagged for regular household garbage collection by Waste Management. To schedule refrigerator pick up, please call 741-4612.
Waste Management WILL NOT COLLECT storm-generated loose tree limbs, tree trunks, and piles of vegetative debris. Jefferson Parish has disaster debris removal contractors working throughout the Parish to collect storm-generated loose debris, including vegetative debris and building materials.
