Jefferson Parish Hurricane Preparedness Week
May 22, 2009
May 25 through May 29 is Hurricane Preparedness Week in Jefferson Parish. Citizens and businesses are encouraged to begin their preparations for the 2009 Hurricane Season.
Parish citizens are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts. There is no charge for this service. Citizens can choose to be alerted via emails and/or through text messages on their cell phones, alphanumeric pagers and blackberry-type devices.
Registering is easy online by going to: http://jeffersonparishla.mystateusa.com and clicking on the "Sign up Here for Alerts" box. Citizens who do not have access to the internet can enroll by calling the Jefferson Parish Department of Citizens Affairs at 736-6000.
The Parish encourages businesses to apply for post-disaster business re-entry placards. In the event that a full-scale re-entry is not feasible, Jefferson Parish will implement its Evacuation Re-Entry. This re-entry placard will be required for access to the disaster area during the re-entry process. You can view the entire plan at www.jeffparish.net, click on Business Re-Entry Plan to see if your business qualifies, then apply at: www.jumpstartjefferson.com.
There will be several events throughout the week relating to disaster preparedness such as: Jefferson Parish Emergency Management open house, pump station testing, flood tube demonstration and generator testing at water plants. Other agencies such as West Jefferson Medical Center, Jefferson Parish School system and Region 1 (Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes) Weapons of Mass Destruction Integrated Response Training Exercise will be conducting internal drills throughout the week.
A complete schedule of events for Hurricane Preparedness Week can be viewed clicking here or by calling Jefferson Parish Emergency Management at 349-5360.
