Jefferson Continues to Monitor the Weather

December 15, 2009

According to the National Weather Service, Jefferson Parish remains in a Flash Flood Watch until this afternoon.  Jefferson Parish Emergency Managers has reported that overnight some locations received as much of 7 inches of rain.

There are several down power lines on the Westbank Expressway at Victory Drive in Westwego. Approximately 1,100 locations are out of power in this location. No damage to structures has been reported.

The Levee District has sandbagged Airline Drive at the St. Charles Parish/Jefferson Parish line. One lane in each direction is open to traffic.

Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system.

Motorists are urged not to drive on flooded streets.  Parish Ordinance prohibits motorists from traveling down flooded streets which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles.

The Jefferson Parish Emergency Operating Center (EOC), 349-5360, is operational until the rain event is over.
