Jefferson Parish is Expecting Heavy Rain from Tropical Depression #5
August 11, 2010
The latest report from the Nation Hurricane Center as of 0800 hours today had classified the broad area of low pressure in the southeast Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Depression #5. Tropical Storm warnings have been issued for Southeast Louisiana, including Jefferson Parish with the possibility of 3 to 5 inches of rain over the next two days, some areas may experience up to 8 inches. Strongest winds are expected to be 40 to 45 miles per hour and storm surges of 1 to 3 feet above normal.
"Currently the system is a tropical depression and is expected to strengthen to a minimum tropical storm, but we remain cautiously optimistic that this system will not have a significant impact on our Parish," said Deano Bonano, Jefferson Parish Chief of Homeland Security.
In preparation for this expected rain event; Jefferson Parish has already manned the pump stations that require staffing until the threat of this rain event has passed. Drainage crews are checking canals and removing any trash and obstructions. Also, crews are cleaning and flushing drain lines and catch basins.
Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system. Additionally, Jefferson Parish Emergency Managers are asking that the general public take the necessary precautions to move equipment and assets from low lying areas and tie down anything that can be tossed around in high winds.
Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling down flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles.
Jefferson Parish Streets Department crews are on stand-by with barricades to close flooded streets. If floodwaters are threatening your home and you wish to have your street closed, contact 911 for assistance.
Jefferson Parish Emergency Managers urge citizens to keep informed of the latest weather conditions, important emergency announcements and closures of any schools and public facilities by listening to their television and radio stations. The Parish will monitor this system and continue to post any information or warnings on our website at: www.jeffparish.net.
The Jefferson Parish Emergency Operation Center (EOC), 504-349-5360, will be manned around the clock until the threat of this system expires.
